
During my third year, I watched the Carnaval parade from a fire escape on Rua da Liberdade. The confetti rained down like snow. I sat with Durvalino, my then-roommate, passing a bottle of gin and laughing until my voice cracked. We swore we’d live like that forever. We didn’t, but the echo of it is still in the bricks of that street.
