This is William Hogarth’s famous engraving Gin Lane. In the centre of the picture on some steps sits the syphilitic prostitute Madam Genever. She is so drunk that she lets go of her baby to take a pinch of snuff and the baby falls to its death on the paving in front of the gin shop below. Above the door reads ‘drunk for a penny, dead drunk for twopence, clean straw for nothing.’
