
My second year, I lived above a gallery on Rua de Santa Maria. One night, rushing to meet a deadline, I dropped my apartment key down a grate. I cried, furious at the city and at myself. An old man from the wine shop across the street helped me fish it out with a broomstick. We shared a glass of red wine on his doorstep. Now, every time I pass by his shop, I smile.
